How is King Henry VIII connected to The Bellhouse?

The Bellhouse was built as a hunting lodge around the 16th century. It took its name from being surrounded by dense woodland and from the hourly “dong” of its bell, as it was a directional guide to hunters and travelling folk. From the 13th Century the English kings would often visit the district for hunting, making Hadleigh castle their residence. Henry VIII was the last English King to have hunted here and is known to have frequently visited The Bellhouse. For more information on our history please visit our about us page.

Is The Bellhouse haunted?

Anne Boleyn, daughter of Lord Rochford, is reputed to haunt The Bellhouse, where she is said to have slept whilst awaiting King Henry VIII to visit her after hunting.

Who is Hilda B?

The family's pub-owning history dates back three generations when Hilda and Andrew Barthaud ran several venues around Southend and the East End, including the Railway in East Street, Prittlewell. During our most recent restoration, Andrew, Hilda’s son and the owner of the East Anglia Pub Company wanted to create a lasting legacy for his mother and so the legendary ‘Hilda B’ beer was born!

What is a Peterboat?

A peter boat or peterboat was a type of fishing boat, found on the Thames Estuary and the adjacent coasts of eastern England. In legend, the peter boat's origins lie with the boats used to ferry passengers to and from St. Peter's Abbey, the Saxon predecessor to Westminster Abbey in London.

Why is The Peterboat sponsoring The Endeavour?

We’re really proud of our part in Old Leigh’s rich history, which is why we are proud sponsors of The Endeavour. The Endeavour was built in Leigh-on-sea in 1926 and spent most of her working life as a cockle fishing vessel. In 1940 she was one of six Leigh "Little Ships" which rescued troops from the beaches at Dunkirk and is the only ship that now survives. The Trust has restored her for community and educational use. The Endeavour took part in the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Pageant in 2012, as one of fifty ships forming an "Avenue of Sails" along the Thames.
